Good Morning Sir!

On my daily commutes I frequently pass by two guards who sometimes, without shame or indignation afterwards, loudly say "Good morning Sir!" while its 8pm or something. I'm not sure if it's an honest mistake, or they simply don't care. Mistake or not, I suppose standing there whole day long and greeting thousands of passers-by can make you loose track of time. Still, it always made me laugh hearing it.

Since I notice the time zone confusion of those two guards, I started to wonder if this is a common ailment for all guards in the Philippines. I noticed that only a few actually do not know in which timezone they are. The guards at my condo, for example, never fail to get it correct.

Then yesterday evening, on my way back home around 7pm, the damnedest thing happened. The guards at my condo greeted me with a cordial nod and "good evening", and without me even realizing it, I loudly replied back "Good morning!". I almost topped it off with a loud "Sir!" too, but I was able to bite my tongue just in time. Although the guards just smiled back at me as if nothing happened (or maybe they were just letting my stupidity pass), I felt like a complete idiot. All this time making fun of guards who confuse the time of day, and now I was doing it myself!

Perhaps I should become a guard instead of a jeepney driver...

Someone told me before that San Miguel Corp tells their employee to always greet people by saying 'Good Morning', the theory is that people are more energetic in the morning and hence if you greet people good morning, their 'morning-alertness' would kick in. I don't know if it actually works.
